James Conlon conducts Ullmann’s The Emperor of Atlantis and Krenek’s The Secret Kingdom
Conlon will conduct LA Opera’s Domingo-Thornton Young Artists and the Colburn Orchestra in a double-bill of Ullmann’s The Emperor of Atlantis and the West Coast premiere of Krenek’s The Secret Kingdom at The Colburn School. The Emperor of Atlantis was created in 1943 by composer Viktor Ullmann and librettist Peter Kien while they were imprisoned in the Nazi concentration camp and ghetto in Terezin. The Secret Kingdom is by Ernst Krenek who immigrated to America after his works were labeled “degenerate” by the Nazis. The performance of Krenek’s opera is particularly meaningful to Mr. Conlon, considering Krenek’s great contribution to the musical life of southern California, where he composed, taught and lived until the end of his life. Performances begin tonight at The Colburn School’s Zipper Hall.
