James Conlon on Britten

“Several years ago, I realized that by taking advantage of the centenary of Britten’s birth I could motivate more attention to his music and while making a personal homage, at least once in my life, have the pleasure of a sustained diet of his music.”
                                                                    - James Conlon

“Perhaps no single musician is delving more broadly into Britten’s voluminous body of operatic, orchestral, vocal, choral and chamber works than conductor James Conlon.”
                                - John Von Rhein, Chicago Tribune

The centenary of English composer Benjamin Britten’s birth (1913-1976) is being widely celebrated throughout the classical music world. In honor of the centenary, James Conlon’s lifelong fascination has been reflected in a three-year performance cycle encompassing opera, orchestra and choral works performed throughout the U.S. and Europe.

As Music Director of LA Opera, Mr. Conlon is spearheading a more than year long celebration of the Britten Centennial with Britten 100/LA: A Celebration, a county-wide collaboration featuring performances, conferences and exhibitions presented by a host of organizations.
